  1. Basic Facts About the 295/45Zr18 Goodyear F-1s - Top
  2. Speed rating Z(149+)
    Max. load 1,687 lbs
    O.D.28.5"
    UTQG RATING 300

Basically a hardness/quality rating, the higher the UTQG rating, the longer the tire will last. Higher UTQG ratings are achieved by making the tire compound harder, and the harder the tire is, the less traction it will provide. See the dilemma? The best traction is achieved with the softest tire which consequently last the fewest number of miles.

The F1's 300 rating means it will last between 20-25,000 miles. Michelin LTX M/S all season tires like you may have on your wife's Explorer have a UTQG rating of 440 and are guaranteed for 65-75,000 miles. Get the idea?

  4. There are very few 295/45ZR18 tires available, and they are all soft, high speed, low mileage tires.

Yokohama may also have a tire that fits, but specs are not available at this time.

  5. Goodyear is coming out with NEW F1 design

Here is Quote from Good year http://www.goodyear.com/media/pr/22502fi.html
"The Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3 – a new European ultra high-performance tire featuring a revolutionary race-tire tread pattern – has been given top honors by two leading European automotive magazines. The new tire was voted best high-performance tire by the United Kingdom’s EVO, and was at the top of Germany’s Auto Bild list against six competitor tires."

  6. Can I switch to a smaller-diameter wheel/tire combo? - Top
  7. Like it or not, you may have to swap wheels to put on some winter tires. You may even prefer to go with a longer-lived tire year-round.

15-inch wheels won't clear the brake calipers, so a 16-inch wheel/tire combo is probably the best bet.

The trick is finding a tire that conforms to the stock tires'

The Lightning is a truck, and heavy. So load ratings are very important.

The O.D. has to be consistent, so that your speedometer/odometer stays accurate, and the transmission shift points are at the same speed. The mathematical equivalent of our 295/45ZR18 in 16" is 275/60R16 275 is approximately .8" inch narrower than 295 and approximately .5" inch taller - equating to a speedometer error of minus 1 mph.

Speed ratings are a judgment call. If you like to tear around on two lane roads with lots of blind curves at speeds over 100 MPH or run moonshine into Memphis on the weekend over the back roads, stay with the V- or Z-rated tires. They are great for that. They're soft, wide, and low profile and will do all that the best and last around 22,000 miles if you don't burn the rears off drag racing.

    Check out these alternatives:

  8. What drag tires are available for the Lightning? - Top
  9. Unfortunately, there are no drag slicks available for 18" rims. The closest is 16" rims and the tires are only 26" in diameter compared to our stock 28.5. If we could get 15" rims to work (which won't because they won't clear the caliper), we could run a drag tire with the proper diameter. Some are working on this problem.

The rims a lot of owners are using are Ford 16" spare tire rims available from many after market wheel shops for about $40.00 each.

There are two tires to select from, both of which are DOT rated.

BFG Drag radial - Many have tried and they don't stick very well. I threw mine away.

Mickey Thompson ET STREETS 11.5x26R16 - These work the best so far (8/00), and if a better solution comes along, it will be posted here.

    Mine cost $366.00 plus tax.

The popular hard covers are the SnugTop Snuglid, A.R.E. Lo-ProA.R.E. LSII,  and Gaylord's low profile lid X-2000.

A soft cover is available from Tekstyle, and many other vendors.

    6. The best way to lower the front is with offset spindles. This mod does not affect the alignment or the ride.

Beware that you will have to be even more careful with the ground effects package, especially the front.

Another way is with the Roush suspension.

Drop shackles have been added by many. They lower the rear an average of 2" which makes the L just about level. This does not affect the handling or weight carrying capacity. Cost is about $38-$75 including shipping. A few manufacturers are: AIM, Bell Tech, DJM

The fog lamp covers are the same as ones listed for Mustang Cobra and the headlight covers are the same as the 99-20000 F-150. They are available in Clear and smoked. The smoked will need to be removed at night for good vision. They are easy to install and remove, less than 5 seconds each.

Fog lamp lens are glass and EASILY broken from rock hits. The Ford replacement cost is around $100 for the pair, but they are available at other locations for about $30. Some have been successful getting free replacements from Ford by printing out the following thread and taking it to the dealership.

Ford makes one that you can get from your dealer. It is just like the cap that comes on the truck except with a lock in the center. It even has a shiny lock cover that says "Ford" on it, the cost is about $20. Definitely worth a trip to the dealership.

For those of you who read my post a few days ago--I fixed the problem. if not here's a recap--I disconnected my battery with the key in the ignition....So NONE of my keys would work. Had to resort to the tow truck to reset my PATS...However--Roadside gave me this little "raindance" to do and it works as a quick fix...Here goes.....

      1. Get in truck and MANUALLY lock both doors--dont use the power lock button.

      2. Get out using the driver door and MANUALLY lock the door with the key.

      3. Wait 15 mins--drink beer

      4. MANUALLY with key..unlock driver door.

      5. Run around truck 3 times

      6. Get in & lock doors with REMOTE---Then UNLOCK with remote

      7. Put key in ignition--turn to "ON" position and wait 30 seconds

      8. Say prayer and turn key

    10. It is an old wives tale that a clean engine is a good thing and washing the engine will keep it that way. In the old days about the only problem cause by washing the engine was getting water in the distributor. Today's engines have electronic controls, fuse boxes, connections, etc. all of which do not care for water. Especially high pressure water!

If you are going to wash off the engine, first turn it off and let it cool. Steam can get places the water can't so let it cool off. Spray 409 or some other household degreaser that is not harmful to anything on the engine. Wipe with a rag. Wash off with a hose without high pressure. Let dry. Then start engine. Underside of hood and painted parts can be cleaned like other painted parts. Pure silicone on hoses and plastic will look good and help to preserve them. Wash battery tray. If any corrosion is present, clean with baking soda and water which will neutralize the acid. Use a funnel to fill fluids so you don't spill oil on the engine.

You may be interested to know that your transmission has Mercon V which is synthetic and your rear-end has synthetic with friction additive for the positraction. Engine oil is the only non synthetic oil in your truck.

      Noel's Opinion:
Our transmission is filled with Mercon V which is synthetic fluid. The book says to change at 60,000 miles. If you are drag racing, it's a good idea to change every 20-25,000 miles. Change the rear end fluid also. Don't forget the friction additive for our positraction rear ends. This is also synthetic gear lube from the factory.

1999-2000 Ford F-150 Lightning FAQ :At the Strip

    At the Strip

    1. What is the best way to launch my L?

    1. What is the best way to launch my L? - Top
    2. Following are a few thoughts on the subject.

These techniques are for launching on slicks. If you have street tires, never mind.

BURNOUT - You do NOT have to do massive burnouts to these tires to make them hook up. All you do is spin up until they hook. I am very careful to stay well away from the rev limiter so I have never lost boost. Brake, bring tach up to 3,000 RPM's, when tires start to spin, the tach will pick up. Let throttle off, back to 3,000 RPM's. Start letting up on brake. Tires will spin and then hook. Let off. Stop. Shift to neutral. Rev to about 2500-3000 briefly two times. Creep up to lights.

TIRE PRESSURE - Pressure over 18 tends to spin mine so I lower to 18.  Start at 17-18 cold. You will notice that after your run pressure is up to 20. Drop it back to 18. Do this three times only unless you have a compressor. When your tires cool between elimination rounds (20-30) minutes you will find that the pressure has dropped to 16. Not a problem. Leave it there. Fill tires before you go to the track to about 25 to ensure a good seal. If you are not using the tubes, you need to air the tires at least every two weeks as they will loose air and you don't want them to break the bead seal.

LAUNCH- There are several theories to launch. Let's discuss several.

If you are at a bad track and can't stick anywhere, stop, remove slicks, and open a cold beer. This always works.

    14. Some brake squeal is caused by loose pads. However, this is NOT the cause of most brake squeal. The majority of the problem is brought about by crystallization of the outer surface of the brake pad which is caused by heating up the pads in multiple heavy brake applications.

If you are going to drive like this, you need some racing pads like carbon metallic which are made to fit the Lightning. If this is your problem you can either remove and replace the pads. Or remove the pads, sand off the glazing, crosshatch and the rotor. Then put them back on.

You then need to "seat" the pads. Make three or four moderate to strong brake applications from high enough speed where you stay on the brake for at least 10 seconds. Allow several minutes between each application to cool the brakes. The squeal should go away. Avoid repeated severe brake applications in a row while the brakes are hot or riding the brakes to remedy this problem with standard pads. The pads need to cool between applications.

If you haven't driven your L for a while, there might be some light rust on the rotor. Usually a moderate brake application from about 70 mph will clean this off.

There is a caulk like cream you can buy at the auto parts store and put on the back of the pads that might stop this problem.

      Brake Squeal-
Seating the brakes got rid of the squeal.
      Squeaking Brakes

      Purchasing performance pads

One owner posted the following info to use when buying L pads. If the store you use does not have a listing for the Lightning: "I wanted performance friction pads since most of the racers I know swear by them. The local AutoZone carries performance pads, but do not have a listing for the Lightning. As it turns out, the pads for the FRONT of the Lightning are the same as the front of the F-250 3/4 ton pickup (1999) non-superduty when equipped with 4 wheel discs". The rear pads are the same as the expedition.

    15. I have noticed a loss in the L's boost. Why is this? - Top
    16. Here are several post that discuss loss of boost.

It has generally been determined that loss of boost occurs after high rev, long duration burnouts at the strip. I race every week and have never experienced boost loss.

I do not do long burnouts (MT ET Streets) and I watch the tach and never rev over 3K with maybe a kick to 4K but never near the rev limiter. I then brake, shift to neutral rev to 3-4k a couple of time to move the fluid, shift to drive and move up to the lights.

Some of those that have experienced this have added larger transmission coolers, electric fans, and still occasionally loose boost. My system works for me and I have none of the devices listed here.
